Introduction

Keeping up to date with developments and new ideas in HIV treatment presents a major challenge to treating physicians, healthcare providers and researchers. Objective scientific assessment of new drug treatments and therapeutic strategies is therefore essential. It will be the aim of the Ninth International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection to provide a wide-ranging yet accessible forum for such assessment.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Accreditation
UK Accreditation

The Ninth International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection has been incorporated into the CME Programme of the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK. A total of 27 hours has been allocated.

European Accreditation

The Ninth International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection has been granted 22 European CME credits (ECMEC) by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME).

The ‘HIV Glasgow’ is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.

The ‘Ninth International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection’ is designated for a maximum of (or ‘for up to’) 22 hours of European external CME credits. Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

EACCME credits are recognized by the American Medical Association towards the Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA). To convert EACCME credit to AMA PRA category 1 credit, contact the AMA.

Scientific Programme overview

A topical and informative Scientific Programme has already been structured. As in the previous Congresses, this will incorporate plenary presentations by recognised experts from Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Setting this high standard will be the Keynote Lectures presented during the Official Opening, which this year will feature:

  • Dr Clifford Lane (Clinical Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID], Bethesda, Maryland, USA): Pathogenesis of HIV – implications for treatment and prevention
  • Professor Christine Katlama (Head, AIDS Clinical Research Unit, Dept. of Infectious Diseases, Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, Paris, France): How will we use the new ART drugs – where do we position them amongst available therapies?
  • Professor Alan Whiteside (Director, Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division [HEARD], University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa): The implications beyond public health if we don’t manage the HIV epidemic

The Scientific Programme for Glasgow will again address the use of differing therapeutic strategies in a variety of clinical settings. Alongside treatment strategies, adverse events, resistance and other important sessions within the overall programme, developing world perspectives, paediatric treatment and care, and community-related treatment issues will receive detailed attention. Once again, a special plenary session has been co-organised with the International AIDS Society (IAS) during which experts from Uganda, South Africa and Canada will address current key topics in relation to HIV treatment guidelines and antiretroviral drug use in developing countries. The programme will also include several treatment-related contributions from representatives of the HIV community.

To allow for enhanced audience participation, two specially designed interactive Case Study sessions will be presented: the first covering assessment of sick HIV-positive returning travellers; and the second providing updates on the clinical management of complex HIV/AIDS cases. Important concerns associated with long-term management – such as adverse effects, co-morbidities, and the emergence of drug resistance – will also be given in-depth examination during specific plenary sessions.

In looking forward to welcoming this international audience, the Congress Chairperson, Professor Ian Weller, commented: “It is our hope that the Congress continues to reflect real progress in the drug treatment of HIV infection and highlights achievable therapeutic strategies which can improve management and help to resolve treatment-related issues in all parts of the world.”

Scientific Poster Sessions | Top of page

There will be a full selection of scientific posters on display throughout the Congress and the Committee particularly welcomes communications in this form. A reception will take place in the Poster area on the evening of Wednesday 12 November 2008. All registered delegates and accompanying persons are invited.

As at the previous Congresses, the Scientific Poster sessions will form an important integrated element of the programme. Posters of particular merit will receive a “Thistle Award” and will then be reviewed by their authors in special discussion sessions to be held during the lunch intervals on each day of the Congress.
